Zill Patterns that I use:

Note: Where you see #’s, keep in mind that when they are written together, there is no pause between; where there is a * symbol, that represents a space, or a slight pause. I also tend to start with my left hand, so most of the LRL patterns are written in my preferred format. Please change them if you feel more comfortable starting w/ your right. Again, it’s sooo much easier to chant the way it should sound as you’re reading along...I wish that I could incorporate that into this document. Hope I did well enough of a breakdown. The basic zil patterns were learned from one of Delilah's videos, (her first one), and incorporated with instructor's that I have learned from along the way.

GALLOP (Basic) (4/4 Time)
Basic chant to go along with your Gallop Pattern:
"One on the Left, One on the Right" or "(One and-a) (Two and-a) (Three and-a) (Four and-a)"

Zill pattern:
tec teca ~ tec teca ~ tec teca ~ tec teca

Or, for an easier way to play and not lose rhythm while you move:
teca Doum, teca Doum, teca Doum
12 3 , 12 3 , 12 3
(The "teca" is 2 hits; the easiest way to play 'two hits' is to switch off your hands.
Example: teca (LR) Doum (L) teca (RL) Doum (R) etc.

LRL PATTERN
LRR LRR LRR LRR

Left click is steady/strong
L*RR L*RR L*RR L*RR
Rights are quick & together
1 and-a 2 and-a 3 and-a 4 and-a
Lefts are the #’s, Rights are the "and-a’s"
L RR L RR L RR L RR

Turkish (Karshilama) (9/8 Time)

Zill Pattern
doum teca ta’ teca doum teca ta’ta’ta’

Number Pattern
1 2 3 4 5 6 789

Remember that "teca" has 2 hits (the ’dots’ used are only for the purpose of spacing)
doum teca ta’ teca doum teca ta’ta’ta’
1 .........2... 3... 4...... 5...... 6.. 7. 8. 9

LRL Pattern
doum teca ta’ teca doum teca ta’ta’ta’
L....... RL. R... LR.... L... RL...RRR

Practice: L*R*L RRR (to get used to the Pattern)

ALTERNATES TO ABOVE PATTERN: (these are fun and sound nice)
[1] 3 Gallop Patterns / RRR (GGG * RRR)
LRL..RLR.. LRL.. RRR (I'm alternating zils with the "and-a" which will keep you alternating as you go)

[2] 4 Gallop Patterns / LL (GGGG * LL)
LRR LRR LRR LRR LL

You can also use this pattern to slow down your zilling and add a little change:

Number Phrasing
One * Two * Three......OneTwoThree
Left * Right * Left...........RLR

1-2-3 Patterns.....Think:
1...2...3...123
Zil, pause, Zil, pause, Zil, ZilZilZil 1................2...............3,....123

Chifte Telle

think this pattern:

* shave and a hair cut, 1-2-3
* shave and a hair cut 1-2-3-4-5

Zill Language

LRL Pattern

strong...quick/quick/quick....quick/quick/quick/....strong*strong*quick

Number Breakdown
1 123 123 1*2*3
"shave and-a haircut...1.2....1..2..3

You can really play with this pattern...George Abdo has some wonderful songs where you can hear the varying patterns.

Beledi

chant this pattern as you’re playing...
"Right, Right
Back and Forth
Right, Back and Forth
and a"
repeat

Zill Language
doum ..doum.. teca tec ..doum .teca tec and-a

LRL Patterns
LL RLR * L RLR...LR

Easier Breakdown
doum doum teca tec * doum teca tec and-a
L........... L... RL...R .* ....L.... RL. R ...LR
1........... 2.... 12....3 .* ....1..... 12...3..and-a

I count the number pattern this way only to help me keep on track where the strong beats (doums) are, and starting a new 123 count after the strong. (the first 1 and 2 should really be 1 and 1...but you can get lost that way....so just think of the initial start as ONE, TWO and then continue.) (Think: boom..boom...123, boom, 123) This also acts as a trigger for a sharp move on the doums.
